Quelques prieres et meditations Chrestiennes. Rouen: Raphaël du Petit Val, 1593
This uncommon edition of a French Psalms in the translation of Philippe Desportes has recently been distinguished as an intermediary between the editions of 1592 and 1594; only two or three other copies have so far been identified. This 1593 edition contains 71 psalms, where the 1591 edition contains 60, the 1592 edition 70, and the 1594 edition 72. It is the first edition to be bound with the third section, a collection of thirteen prayers and meditations.
3 parts in one volume, 12mo (128 x 70 mm). Roman and italic type, 25 to 31 lines plus headline. Collation: A-O8.4 a4; A-C8.4; A-E8.4: 140 leaves. Printer's device on three title pages, woodcut initials, ruled in red, pagination of some leaves corrected in pencil. (Tear without loss to G6, small tears to D3 and D4 of the third part.)
Binding: Contemporary French brown morocco gilt (132 x 80 mm), interlaced "YY" monogram (seemingly a Greek λλ upside down) in centre of covers within an oval wreath, in each corner 2 intertwined upsilons within a leafy spray, flat spine with small gilt flower stamp, stubs of 2 pairs of green silk ties, edges gilt. (A few small repairs to joints and spine.)
Acquisition: Purchased in 2009 from Librairie Jammes, Paris.
