This edition reflects the Aldine press’s engagement with ecclesiastical scholarship under papal patronage. It collects key early Christian texts, including works by Salvian of Marseille, Maximus of Turin, and Sulpicius Severus, with annotations by Pietro Galesini. This copy, in a fine contemporary Parisian morocco binding (1587–1601) for Jacques Auguste de Thou, later passed through the libraries of Antoine-Augustin Renouard, Lord Vernon (Sudbury Hall), and Robert Stayner Holford.


Folio (325 x 222 mm). Roman, Greek and Hebrew types, 49 lines plus headline. collation: a6 A-Z6 AA-CC6 DD4 EE-II6 kk-mm6: 214 leaves. Woodcut Aldine device to title-page, decorated initials, guide letters in initial spaces. (Slight toning, occasional light spotting.)


binding: Parisian olive green morocco (331 x 227 mm), between 1587 and 1601, for de Thou with his arms impaled with those of his first wife Marie de Barbaçon de Cany, their monogram in spine compartments, gilt edges. (Light rubbing, spine sunned, wear to head and foot, covers with some small scratches.)
