Description
[PAPAL BULL]. Bulla de la Sancta Crusada. Madrid, 1 September 1576 to 25 October 1583
Eight printed pamphlets of a form of Papal Indulgence, issued to Spain and its Catholic inhabitants and granting them certain privileges for their services in religious crusade. In the reign of Ferdinand and Isabella, during what is often termed the Reconquest, the Bull held an elevated importance. From 1576, it was declared that it must be re-issued each year; this series comprises the first eight years of its annual publication.
Only the second, sixth, eighth and possibly third pamphlets are recorded in Iberian Books, and of these, no surviving copies of the of the third and sixth are known. Only the eighth features in Pérez Pastor, Bibliografía madrileña (Madrid 1891). One copy of the second pamphlet is found in the Real Academia de la Historia, Madrid (9/3682(47)) and one copy of the eighth is found in the Biblioteca Nacional Española, Madrid (R/5251(12)).
