FIRST EDITION of an important biography of Cardinal Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle (1517-1586). For a series of books in the present sale bound for Granvelle, see lots 1607 (Boccaccio), 1638 (Courchetet), 1679 (Estienne), 1696 (Gambara), 1720 (Guevara), 1793 (Petrarch), and 1864 (Vives).

2 volumes, 12mo (165 x 95 mm). Roman type, 25 lines. collation: a-b12 A-O12 P4 (final verso blank); [π]3 A-Q12 R4 S1: 196 + 200 leaves. Two folding plates, woodcut arms on title-pages, woodcut initials, head- and tailpieces, some modern pencil annotations to first volume. (Some light spotting to upper margin, 20 mm tear to outer margin of H6 of second volume.)


binding: Contemporary mottled brown calf (170 x 110 mm), manuscript shelfmarks "23" and "2356" on upper covers, spines with 5 full bands, red title-piece in second compartment, gilt acorn within leafy border in other compartments, red edges, marbled endpapers. (Bindings somewhat scraped, some worming and cracking to joints, with old repairs to joints of first volume.)
