FIRST EDITION, LARGE-PAPER COPY OF THE FIRST NATIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHY OF FRANCE, containing a proposal to the king for the formation of a national library and the first illustration of a modern bookcase (p. 511). The author proposes the arrangement of books according to a system closely resembling decimal classification. This work contains bio-bibliographical information about some 3000 authors (alphabetised by their Christian names), including the lawyer and poet Jean Taron, Sieur de la Roche-Taron (for whose copy of Du Bartas, see lot 1609). large paper copy, folio (399 x 258 mm). Roman and italic type. collation: ã8 ~e6 ~i4 õ4 A-Z6 Aa-Zz6 Aaa6: 304 leaves. Title-page with woodcut device, portrait of Henri III on verso, woodcut initials and printer's ornaments throughout. (Dampstain at lower margin from Ss3 to end of textblock.)
binding: Eighteenth-century French olive green morocco (412 x 280 mm), possibly by Derome, 3 gilt fillets round sides, spine richly gilt with birds on branches in compartments, gilt edges, marbled endpapers, inner dentelles. (Extremities slightly rubbed.)
