A biography of Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle (1517–1586), an influential advisor to the Emperor Charles V and avid collector of books and bindings. A series of volumes in the Bibliotheca Brookeriana come from the library of Cardinal Granvelle: in the present sale, see lots 1607 (Boccaccio), 1679 (Estienne), 1696 (Gambara), 1720 (Guevara), 1793 (Petrarch), 1864 (Vives), 1749 (Lévêque), 1793 (Petrarch), and 1864 (Vives).

4 books in one, 12mo (165 x 95 mm). Roman type, 29 lines plus headline. collation: π3 A-2B12 2C8 2D1: 542 leaves. Engraved portrait of Perrenot de Granvelle preceding title, woodcut printer's device on title-page, woodcut initials and head- and tailpieces, marginal annotations. (Slight browning towards edges, some spotting.)


binding: Contemporary French calf (170 x 105 mm), frame composed of a single gilt fillet, spine with 5 bands, compartments gilt, dark brown morocco title-piece, plain edges stained red, marbled pastedowns and endleaves. (Binding slightly worn at extremities, wear to head of spine, joints cracking.)


acquisition: Purchased in 2011 from Librairie Paul Jammes, Paris.
