Venice: Paolo Gherardo, 1554

THE THIRD, AND MOST COMPLETE, EDITION OF THIS COLLECTION OF COUNSELS FOR GENTLEMEN BY SABBA DA CASTIGLIONE (1480–1554), first published at Bologna in 1549. Sabba da Castiglione was an art collector, knight of Saint John of Jerusalem, and agent on Rhodes for Isabella d'Este, marchesa of Mantua, in her acquisition of antiquities. His work provides, among other things, a vivid impression of his own collection and intimate details of the lives of artists he knew, becoming a key record of the transitional period of Western art collecting.

This edition is based on a manuscript today conserved in the Biblioteca Municipale di Faenza in the hand of the author's chaplain with corrections by the author. It was published shortly after his death. The work is composed of two series of counsels, the one meant to provide advice useful in becoming a perfect Knight of Saint John, the other a series of small treatises or digressions on various topics, added in the course of the successive editions.

4to (205 x 140 mm). Italic type, roman in margins, 43 lines plus headline. collation: *44 a-z4 A-L4: 144 leaves. Engraved portrait of the author on title-page, woodcut printer's device on final verso, woodcut initials, contemporary inscription on upper endleaf, early manuscript annotations in an unidentified hand. (Slight browning and spotting, water stain to gutter at head throughout second half, worming to final quire.)

binding: Contemporary limp vellum (208 x 155 mm), flat spine, faded manuscript title to spine, traces of 2 pairs of ties. (Spine damaged, extremities rubbed, worming to covers and endpapers.)
