RARE FIRST EDITION of an early publication on librarianship.


Rudolf Capell (1635-1684) was a pedagogue, historian and philologist and a Professor of History and Greek at the University of Hamburg. The present work is a treatise on the public library and its benefits, presenting the reader with advice on how to manage and improve a public library. Capell praises libraries across Europe, offering the modern reader an insight into historical libraries and librarianship. Across his lifetime, Capell published 97 treatises in the historical and philological fields.

12mo (130 x 75 mm). Gothic, roman and italic type, 25 lines plus headline. collation: )(10 A-2G12 (final 4 leaves blank): 370 leaves. Engraved portrait frontispiece and engraved additional title, woodcut initials and head- and tailpieces. (Slight browning, 60 mm tear to foot of U5 not affecting text.)


binding: Contemporary vellum (132 x 95 mm) with fore-edge flaps, faded manuscript author's name and shelfmark to spine, blue speckled edges. (Binding very lightly soiled.)
