Description

BOTERO, GIOVANNI. Della ragion di stato libri dieci, con tre libri delle cause della grandezza, e magnificenza delle città di Giovanni Botero Benese. Venice: Giovanni II Giolito De Ferrari and Giovanni Paolo Giolito De Ferrari, 1589

FIRST EDITION OF BOTERO'S ANTI-MACHIAVELLIAN TREATISE IN A SPANISH ARMORIAL BINDING FOR NUÑEZ DE GUZMÁN.

Giovanni Botero (1544-1617) was an Italian Jesuit priest, poet, diplomat and philosopher. This work, largely recognised as the author's key contribution to political philosophy, dwells on the notion of obedience as the foundation of the state. Botero takes a somewhat anti-Machiavellian stance, sustaining that this obedience is dependent on the virtuousness of the leader, which he aligns with Christian ethics.

Sir William Godolphin purchased the whole of the library of Nuñez de Guzmán; for other books belonging to Sir William Godolphin in Nuñez de Guzmán bindings, see Bibliotheca Brookeriana III, 9 July 2024, lot 419 and Bibliotheca Brookeriana V, 10 December 2024, lot 1066.

A notable feature of the present volume is the presence of instructions to the binder for the lettering of the spine on the verso of the final leaf: "Botero rag: di St:".
