Description

BARDI, GIROLAMO. Della chronologia universale, parte quarta. Venice: Lucantonio II Giunta, 1581

A CONTEMPORARY ROMAN GREEN MOROCCO BINDING, PROBABLY FROM THE BIBLIOTECA ALTEMPSIANA.

Fourth and final volume of the four that make up the Chronologia universale of the Camaldolese monk and Florentine writer Girolamo Bardi (c. 1544-1594). In the series, Bardi lists all the periods of heresy, prodigies and illustrious men who have marked the kingdoms of the West and the East. This final volume covers the events that took place from the year 994 to 1580.

What appears to be the complete set of Bardi’s Chronologia uniuersale is cited in a manuscript inventory of the Altemps library taken in Rome 1609, transcribed by Alfredo Serrai in his La Bibliotheca Altempsiniana (2008; p. 198, no. 2611): “Chronologia del Bardi. In f[oli]o. V[enezi]a. tom. 3." (the four volumes of this set were customarily bound as three). The printed books in the Altemps library were mostly dispersed at the end of the seventeenth century, save for those sold in these rooms on 8 July 1907 ("Catalogue of the choicer portion of the library of the dukes of Altemps, removed from Piazza S. Lungi del Francesi") and in Rome on 20 January-10 February 1908 (Dario Rossi, "Catalogue des livres et manuscrits composant la Bibliothèque des Ducs d’Altemps").

Volume 4 only, folio (340 x 245 mm). Roman and italic type, text in columns. collation: ☩2 ☩☩2 3X-6T4 6V6: 282 leaves (6V5v and 6V6v blank). Woodcut printer's device on title-page and final recto, woodcut initials and head- and tailpieces. (Some browning and spotting, small scattered ink stains to 5B4, 15mm tear to upper corner of 5M3 very slightly affecting text.)

binding: Contemporary Roman green morocco (355 x 260 mm), large border frame of gilt roll featuring trophies within gilt fillets, gilt fleurons at outer angles, gilt crowned wreath in centre containing a rampant goat (arms of Altemps), spine with 4 full bands, title in gilt lettering down spine, "CHRON. / UNIVERS. / PAR. IIII.", stubs from 2 pairs of ties, edges gilt and gauffered. (Extremities slightly rubbed, joints cracking, head of spine defective, spine ends and corners with old repairs, wormed pastedowns.)

provenance: Probably Biblioteca Altempsiana (Mark Sittich von Hohenems Altemps (1533–1595) and/or his legitimised grandson, Giovanni Angelo Altemps (1587-1620)), arms on binding—library in Vaduz, Liechtenstein, library label on upper pastedown—Jean Fürstenberg (1890-1982), red morocco gilt booklabel on upper pastedown, bequeathed to Fondation Fürstenberg-Beaumesnil, sale, Wemaëre, de Beaupuis, Denesle, Binoche et Giquello, Paris, 9 December 2013, lot 105. acquisition: Purchased at the preceding sale. references: USTC 812285; Edit16 CNCE 4188
