Description

Height 14.5 cm, 5¾ in.

Collection of George Sheridan (1923-2008), acquired in Paris, London and New York from the 1960s onwards, and thence by descent; a passion nurtured from his friendship with Professor Samuel Eilenberg (1913-1998), who donated his collection to the Metropolitan Museum in New York in 1987.

Syamatara, holding the stems of two varieties of lotus flower, is seated in the regal posture of lalitasana on a double lotus pedestal. The surface of the sculpture is worn and softened over years of devotional handling ; the mercury gilding is almost entirely abraded, with only traces remaining in the more inaccessible areas of the statue.
