The present bowl belongs to a small subgroup of wares attributable to Nishapur based on two representative examples, one of which is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (inv. no.36.20.4) and was excavated at Nishapur in 1935, whilst the second is in the Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg (inv. no.VG.787), and has a Nishapur petrofabric (Golombek et al. 1996, pp.203-4). These wares are characterised by an aversion to plant or animal motifs, instead opting for geometric patterns in which fields are filled with cross-hatching or scale-filling.
