inscriptions


The inscriptions beneath the painting comprise a poem in Turkish in praise of Mecca and Medina and calling the painting a blessed depiction of the Holy Places. It begins:


‘aceb nakş-i mübarek bağ-i cennet

bu resm-i şehr-i sultan-i risalet


‘Marvellous, blessed picture, the heavenly garden!

This is the depiction of the city of the sultan of prophethood.'


dhahhabahu sadiq muhammad bi-sakin fatih sultan muhammad, ‘Muhammad Sadiq (Mehmed Sadık) [known] as the resident of Fatih Sultan Mehmed (the Fatih district in Istanbul) illuminated it.’
