His sale ('The Property of Monsieur X'), Paris, Etienne Ader, Hotel Drouot, 12–13 March 1934, lot 69, for 350 francs (as attributed to);
Where purchased by Maurice Gobin (1883–1962), Paris (Gobin was a Paris art dealer whose clients included the British Museum, to whom he sold modern French drawings, including a drawing by Manet of Berthe Morisot);
From whom acquired by purchase or exchange by Pierre Dubaut (1886–1968), Paris, by 1937 (Dubaut was an art dealer and animal painter in his own right who focused on horses and was an admirer and collector of Gericault’s work);
Thence by descent;
From whom purchased by the present owners, c. 2009.
